Introduction
Intrinsic aging, also known as chronologic aging, represents the structural,functional, and metabolic changes in the skin that is parallel to aging with inherent degenerative changes in body organs due to declining physiologic functions and capacities. This process typically begins in our twenties where the signs of biological intrinsic aging are normally not visible for decades but yet they lie beneath the surface of the skin for years. The continuous aging process includes diminished or defective synthesis of collagen and elastin in the dermis results in breakdown in the facial support system leading to thinner skin that loses much of its elasticity, larger pores, drier skin and fine wrinkles. Furthermore, aging also causes damage to our cells thus our dead skin cells do not shed as quickly while the turnover of new skin cells decrease as we age. |
